Spain - Fall 2019 (In Progress)


Your photography pilgrimage and cultural discoveries through northern Spain begin in Bilbao, home of the Guggenheim Museum. Your romantic odyssey will weave its way through the culinary capital of San Sebastian, the lush northern peaks of Picos de Europa, the coastal village of Santander and the nearby Cuevas de Altamira. Along the way you will walk the Camino de Santiago, visit Spain's most renowned wine regions and discover the hidden beauty of one of Europe's most exotic countries.

*Fall 2019*

Day 1 Arrive in Bilbao - arrive at hotel, introductory meeting, explore the waterfront, including nightlife, .

Day 2 Early departure to Santo Domingo de la Calzada in La Rioja. Visit Frank Ghery’s architectural delight, Hotel Elciego, vineyard tours and a walk along the Camino de Santiago

Day 3 A day excursion to Burgos, one of Spain’s iconic cities. Here you will see the gothic architecture of the Cathedral of Burgos, a principal stop for all pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. Lunch in the town square and an afternoon of exploration in the medeival streets of the city, or a stroll along the river will provide all photographers with ample opportunities to see the richness of this city at its best.

Day 4 After a quick breakfast, we will head back to Bilbao. There will be a guided tour of the city and a chance to explore on your own. Your afternoon photography workshop will be followed by a cooking class where you will have the chance to chronicle your experience in photos but also experience a homemade dinner prepared just for you.

Day 5 Today we will visit the Guggenheim museum, walk along the seafront promenade, and discover the delicacies of Basque cuisine. The late afternoon will provide an opportunity to share your photos and learn how to edit them, ask questions and learn new skills as a photographer. Dinner will include a wine tasting event as well.

Day 6 Our destination today is an excursion to Guernica. The bombing of this village was Picasso’s inspiration for one of his greatest works: La Guernica. Situated in the mountains of the Basque Country, you will find breath taking views and historic sites from the Spanish Civil War.

Day 7 Our journey today takes us to Santander, a picturesque seafront city renowned for its seafood, open markets, and picturesque outdoor restaurants. After an early lunch we will travel a short distance to visit the Caves of Altamira, a UNESCO site preserving the cave paintings of some of Spain’s earliest inhabitants. We will return to Santander for dinner before a late evening return to Bilbao.

Day 8 We turn our heads eastward to spend the day in the idyllic coastal town of San Sebastian. The city, known for its spectacular La Concha beach, is also home to some of Spain’s most highly acclaimed chef’s. You will roam the ancient streets of the city, meander in and out of the bars to try your hand at ordering the Basque country’s version of “Tapas” called “Pinxtos”. Here you will delight in telling your story with your camera and sharing your images with your travel companions. After dinner we will return to Bilbao.

Day 9 Headed home - Transfer to airport


Each day we will leave at designated times for each of our destinations to hike and photograph with prepared lunches and snacks. We will arrive or return in time for dinner hour together, along with wine tasting, image review, and storytelling. Goals, workshops, and instruction will be part of everyday’s photography. Once our final schedule and locations are set, each day will have a planned goal and workshop to increase your storytelling and expand your cultural awareness and creativity.


Our Northern Spain trip is jam packed and very hearty. Hiking, climbing, and some strenuous activity will be part of each day’s journey.

Accommodations are double occupancy. If you would like a single, please notify us. There will be a fee based on current accommodation pricing.

Our maximum number of participants will be 8.

Not included : travel into and out of  Bilbao, travel insurance, expenses not designated by The Peregrin.
